Rest
Over the course of one's journey, resting will become a key resource for a player. Resting goes beyond lying down. It includes being warm, having nice food & drink, and sleeping uninterrupted. There are 3 types of rest: good, bad, and none.
Good Rest: Good rest implies that the character has plenty of food, drink, warmth, and uninterrupted sleep. It is very difficult for someone to find this kind of refuge out in the wilderness, even by a campfire and in a tent. Generally, good rest can only be obtained in a home or inn. Taking a turn to stand watch automatically ruins a good rest. Having a nightmare automatically ruins a good rest. Getting up briefly to use the rest room (or outdoors) may not break a good rest, although anything to get the mind active may ruin a good rest.
After waking from a good rest, the character gains the following benefits: First, a character may restore 2 hp. Second, a person restores mana equal to their intelligence score. Third, a person may regain any special abilities that are recovered from a good rest. Fourth, a character may reduce their (non-magical) exhaustion by 1 level.
Bad Rest: Bad rest is when a character gets their sleep, but one or more of the above conditions for a good rest is not met. Getting a bad rest is normal for the majority of people, especially when they're far from home. A character needs at least 6 hours of sleep to get a bad rest.
After waking from a bad rest, the character gains the following benefits: First, a character may restore 1 hp. Second, a person restores mana equal to their intelligence score (rounded down).
Restless: Being restless means that a character has not slept, or at least they're in a constant condition being woken when their body is trying to sleep. The restless condition begins on the second night after staying up an entire night and following day. A character that is restless cannot gain any of the benefits of a good or even bad rest. For every hour after nightfall on the 2nd night, the character must roll a constitution saving throw or they collapse from exhaustion and gain 1 exhaustion level. They become incapacitated for 12 hours + 1 hour for every hour they have stayed awake after the second nightfall. If a character cannot receive the benefit of a good or bad rest until after their second bad rest after being restless.
Below Zero: There may come a point when a character is knocked to 0 HP or lower. When this happens, a character immediately suffers the consequences of the restless condition and they also immediately suffer 1 level of exhaustion (instead of the exhaustion from staying up for every hour). The character then must sleep for 12 hours + 1h for every damage point they are below 0. Afterwhich they may wake up, and remain at their negative hp value. While they are at negative hp, any damage they take will reapply the below zero condition. While awake at negative hp, the character's speed is 0 and they must be prone. The below zero condition ends once the character has reached at least 1 hp, but they retain the restless condition until they normally expell this condition.
